Click the "Start a 30-Day Free Trial" button and enter your name, email address, and password—no credit card required. We'll send you a confirmation email with a link to verify your address. Once you click that link, you're all set to add emergency contacts and create your first trip.
When you log in for the first time, Rangerly will prompt you to add an emergency contact. Just enter their name and email address, and we'll send them an invitation to get set up.
We recommend giving your emergency contacts a heads up directly after you invite them. Let them know to expect an email from Rangerly so they recognize it as legitimate. It's also a great opportunity to discuss what you'd like them to do if they ever receive an alert—whether that's trying to call you first, checking certain locations, or any other preferences specific to your situation.
They'll receive an email invitation with a link to complete their setup. They'll confirm that email address is where they want to receive alerts and can optionally add their phone number if they'd like text alerts too.
After at least one of your emergency contacts has finished their setup, you'll see a prompt to create a trip when you log in. You'll enter details like where you're going, what you're doing, and when you expect to return—then you're ready to head out.
Absolutely. Before inviting your actual emergency contacts, add yourself as a contact first. This way you can create test trips, intentionally miss check-ins, and experience the entire process without causing any unnecessary worry. It's a great way to get comfortable with how everything works.

If you lose cell service after creating your trip, Rangerly will still alert your emergency contacts if you miss your check-in. The system monitors your trip from our end, so it works even when you're off the grid.
Your emergency contacts will receive a notification (via email or text, based on their preferences) with the trip details you provided. The message reminds them not to panic and suggests steps to confirm you're safe—like trying to reach you directly. If they can't reach you and believe something is wrong, we advise them to contact emergency services.
Yes! If you're running late or your plans change, just tap the "Extend" button on your active trip to push back your check-in time. You can do this as many times as needed—we know adventures don't always go according to plan.
First, log into Rangerly and check in as soon as possible. This sends an automated follow-up alert letting your contacts know you're safe. However, we strongly recommend calling them directly as well—they may have already taken action (like calling local authorities or heading out to find you), and a personal call will help stop those wheels in motion. You'll find their phone numbers listed on the app's homepage for easy access.
No. Privacy is one of Rangerly's core features—your contacts are only notified if you miss a check-in, not every time you head out. You can adventure freely without broadcasting your plans.

No. Rangerly doesn't track your location. We only know what you tell us when you create a trip. Your privacy is a core feature, not an afterthought.
No. Because Rangerly doesn't track your location or run continuously in the background, it won't drain your battery. You only interact with it when setting up trips or checking in, so the battery impact is negligible.
Since your trip runs on Rangerly's servers, and not your phone, your emergency contacts will still be notified if you miss your check-in—even with a dead phone. Of course, you'll need to find a working device with internet access to actually check in or extend your trip.
